About the chapel

Built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Medici Chapel is a work of art by Michelangelo and Bernardo Buontalenti. The site functions as a museum whose main rooms are the New Sacristy and the Chapel of the Princes. Here you will find the bodies of the most important characters in the history of Florence.

The founder of the Medici House was Giovanni Di Bici Dei Medici (1360-1429), father of Cosimo, who managed to significantly increase his father’s fortune, making him, along with Palla Strozzi (1373-1462), the richest resident of Florence and the most important donor to public works. One of the factors that contributed to the establishment of the Medici power in Florence was the catalytic contribution of the family to the cultural flourishing of the city after the invasion and the territorial claims of France and Spain.

One of the most important works related to the Medici and entrusted to Michelangelo by Pope Leo I was the sacristy in the northern part of the Church of San Lorenzo, the Medici funeral chapel known to all. The funeral chapel was built around 1520-1534 and remains unfinished, as do other well-known works by the sculptor due to some personal distractions and numerous other commissions. More generally, the work presents a combination of architecture and plastic art, thus creating an interaction relationship.

Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. He was a sculptor, architect, painter but also a poet. As a sculpture, he was strongly influenced by European plastic and mannerism but also by the Baroque. From the age of 13 he started working, and after a year he ended up at the Medici court due to his skills in plastic surgery and was placed under the protection of Lorenzo die Medici. During this time he came into contact with ancient sculptural art but also with ancient philosophy as well as with Neoplatonism and his mentor was Bertoldo di Giovanni. Few could deny that Michelangelo left behind works of unsurpassed beauty and significant style that impress and will impress visitors and researchers for many years to come. One of these works is the sculptures in the Medici funeral chapel in Florence.
