About the Piazza

Situated in the heart and political centre of the city, this square is still very popular and sought after by tourists. Built between 1560 and 1575, the Piazza della Signoria was once a place of meeting and protest, but today it is a place of meeting and celebration. In addition, it is a veritable open-air art gallery that houses three large statues: the Neptune, by Bartholomew Ammannati, which celebrates Tuscany’s naval victories; the David, a replica of Michelangelo’s original work, which stood in the square until 1873, when it was moved to an art gallery; and the Hercules and Caco, which represents the victory of Hercules over Caco’s wickedness

What to do in Piazza della Signoria?

In the square, in addition to enjoying the statues already mentioned, you can visit the Logia dei Lanzi, a small open-air museum with various sculptures, such as The Abduction of the Sabine women or The Perseus with Medusa’s head; the Neptune fountain; the equestrian statue of Cosimo I and the Palazzo Vecchio, the building that is Florence’s town hall. Throughout the year, and especially on warm evenings, locals and tourists alike gather to relax, enjoy themselves and listen to the local artists who perform there. Another tip is to stop by a bar or restaurant in the square to enjoy delicious authentic Italian food with a glass of traditional wine.
